A Masquerade on the Internet
Phoebe Man (1999-2000)

People can see each other live in a chat room. The interesting thing is that we can use text and image to construct our identities. These images can be totally different from the reality. We can still use these fake identities to socialise in the chat rooms.

In May and June, 1999, six male friends and I exchanged bodies and appeared in the chat room "Netmeeting". We explored ourselves by temporarily abandoned our daily roles and context.

When we started our works, I asked my partner the question, "What kind of girl he wants to be in a chat room?" Then he will dress me up in the way he proposed. I l appeared on the screen and he talked to the people in the chat room. People in the chat room would think that they were talking to a girl.

Each friend wanted to play roles of different chat room girls but the girls were all need to be sexy. Inam wanted me to be a butch. Then he could talk to lesbians whom in the real life would not be interested in him. American born Chinese Mr. Y wanted me to be a Chinese girl who only dates white guys. These girls in real life would not approach him. Tony wanted to do an experiment and to compare a Chinese girl who has obvious identity and a space girl who has vague identity. H e wanted to find out which girl would be more attractive in a chat room? I wanted all of my male friends to wear white shirts, which could make them look more sincere, I think. We all became mirrors to reflect the desires of each other. Through the fake identity, we reviewed our true selves.

Our souls and bodies were separated and we used another person's image to talk to the people in the chat room. It was quite successful. No one in the chat room had suspected us. After the performance, I interviewed my partners and asked about their feeling. Tony felt that it made no difference by using whatever identities, because people there just wanted to see naked bodies or wanted people to see them naked. Joe thought that it was a kind of release to be a girl and he could do something he would not try as a man. He could also understand the feeling of a woman when treated as a sexual object only. When I appeared as a man, almost no one wanted to talk to me. When I lent my body to my male partner, their conversations always surprised me. I talked about which beer was better and had sexual conversation. It was nice to experience another people's life.
