14K 07年11月，因家居設計物件店有「拾肆K」字樣的T恤出售，被警方大舉搜查並逮捕了店員和設計師。店主強調設計只是一個玩笑，並無意製作黑社會物品。 事件令我想起兩個概念：一個是Gestalt理論，這個理論的基本概念是，我們看東西，必須要同時看這東西的脈絡，才能得到一個較整全的概念。單看14K或許可以簡單看成是一個社團的名字，但若看它是怎樣被製造，怎樣被使用，在那種情況下出現，那14K的意義便有可能只是一個玩笑，一個足金含量的稱號，14000的代號或只是一個門牌。 另一個是符號學(Semiotics)的概念，符號由能指(signifier)和所指(signified)組成。若套用現在的例子，能指是14K，所指可以是社團名稱、門牌或數字代號。能指和所指並沒有必然的關係。符號在文化中的定義可以是歧義、不定和多變的，並容許再創造。 基於以上的理解，加上作𤔡一個藝術工作者，我用多個14K作𤔡材料創造了一個抽象的圖像。圖像隨心構成，邊看邊砌，並沒有特定的意義指向，希望可以藉此開拓一個較廣闊的想像空間並引發更多14K的新定義。 In November 2007, the Hong Kong Police searched branches of a design product shop and arrested shopkeepers and the designer of T-shirts that printed with Chinese words ‘14K’. Owner of the shop emphasized that this was only a joke and the shop has no intention to manufacture any product connected with the triad society. This event made me think of 2 theories. One is Gestalt theory. The basic idea of this theory is that we have to see things in their own context. Then we can have a better perception of the things. We should not just see part of the things. If we simply look at ‘14K’, we could think of the name of the triad society. If we see it with its context, it can be a joke, 14000 or just a doorplate. Another theory is Semiotics. The component of a sign consists of signifier and signified. If we use 14K as an example, the ‘signifier’ is 14K, and the ‘signified’ can be the name of a triad society, the sign of a number or a doorplate. The signifier and the signified have no essential relationship. Sign nowadays can have a lot of meanings. It is not fixed and it is changeable. Its meanings can be recreated. According to my
understanding, and as an artist, I use “14K” to create an abstract painting.
I did it spontaneously and automatically. The image does not carry any
specific meaning. It can be many things or it can be nothing. The aim
is to open up the imaginary space and generate new meanings for the sign
